Korea Donates Vehicles to Support IOM Jordan’s Syria Crisis Response
Jordan - Yesterday (9/4) the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Jordan donated eight Hyundai vehicles to IOM Jordan to support IOM’s emergency response to the Syria conflict, now entering its fifth year.
The handover ceremony, which was held in Amman, was attended by senior officials, including Korean Ambassador to Jordan Choi Hong-ghi and IOM Jordan Chief of Mission Davide Terzi.
The three Hyundai buses and five pick-ups will be added to IOM’s fleet of vehicles, which has helped to transport over 460,000 Syrian refugees and their belongings to refugee camps in Jordan since 2012.
The vehicles will also be used to support other IOM operations in Jordan, including providing transport for IOM doctors and nurses implementing vaccination and TB awareness raising campaigns targeting Syrian refugees and host communities.
IOM Chief of Mission Terzi thanked the Korean Government. “This generous contribution will help provide safe transportation for Syrians seeking safety in Jordan, especially the most vulnerable. The vehicles will also support our broader programme in Jordan to mitigate the impact of the Syrian crisis,” he said.
Ambassador Mr. Choi Hong-ghi noted: “This assistance is in line with the Korean Government’s efforts to support Jordan in coping with the Syrian refugee crisis. This included contributions to Jordan worth $3.45 million in 2014.”
“We are delighted to provide assistance to the IOM. We believe it performs a key role in supporting the refugees. We hope the vehicles will contribute to the work of IOM and enhance the welfare of the refugees,” he added.
Another six Korean vehicles, including two ambulances, will also be provided to the Jordan Government to serve both refugee and host communities.
