IOM and UNHCR Sign Referrals Protocol for Vulnerable Migrants in Algeria
Algiers - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Algeria signed on Tuesday, 23 January, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at establishing a joint referral system for individuals involved in mixed movements.
The SOPs aim at strengthening cooperation between IOM and UNHCR in the identification, referral, protection, and assistance of vulnerable and at-risk migrants and asylum seekers, as well boosting coordination in the area of information sharing and data collection.
"The finalization of the joint SOPs between our two agencies is a major achievement in the context of our protection work. We will now focus on training our respective teams to ensure the successful implementation of the SOPs in the field," said Hawa Diallo, IOM Algeria’s Protection Officer.
"In the unique context of Algeria's mixed movement, the synergy between UNHCR and IOM is crucial to effectively address the diverse needs of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. It is paramount that people on the move are aware there is a dedicated space for support—if not through UNHCR, then through IOM and vice versa," said Emilie BAK, UNHCR Algeria’s Protection Officer.
"This collaboration holds immense value in shaping our day-to-day efforts," she added.
The protocols, developed jointly by the protection teams of IOM and UNHCR, respond to a crucial need for coordination in the face of complex migration flows. They are in line with the new joint commitment framework of UNHCR and IOM dated June 30, 2022, and the letter of June 9, 2020, on the framework for the development of SOPs and the protection of victims of trafficking.
The signing of these SOPs took place in the presence of the UN Resident Coordinator in Algeria, as well as representatives of other UN agencies.
This joint initiative reflects the commitment of IOM and UNHCR to collaborate efficiently in the context of mixed movements.
