IOM Algeria Holds Roundtable on Migration Governance
Algiers, July 8 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Algeria, with the support of the United Nations Network on Migration, is organizing on July 8, 2024, in Algiers a national roundtable to discuss migration governance.
The roundtable will bring together key actors in the field of migration, including representatives from the United Nations, international partners, and embassy representatives from the countries of origin of migrant communities present in Algeria. Participants will discuss common challenges and explore innovative solutions to promote safe, orderly, and regular management of migration and asylum in Algeria and the region.
The North Africa region is experiencing significant migratory movements, driven by various factors such as political conflicts, economic crises, social inequalities, technological connectivity, legislative changes, environmental degradation, and climate change. Algeria, located at the crossroads of several migration routes, plays a crucial role as a transit country.
The topics discussed will include exploring migration management strategies in Algeria, with a focus on effective border governance, the protection of vulnerable and forcibly displaced migrants, and assisted voluntary return and reintegration in the countries of origin of migrants. In addition, the roundtable will explore ways to strengthen international and regional cooperation for more effective and humane management of migration.
This national roundtable marks a remarkable milestone in Algeria’s efforts to promote a comprehensive and balanced approach to effective migration governance. It demonstrates the country’s vision to play an active and constructive role in finding sustainable solutions to global migration challenges while respecting the rights and dignity of all involved individuals.
This event is generously funded by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the U.S. State Department as part of the Regional Migration Program for Africa.
