Cairo, Egypt- The Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) held a webinar on “Addressing Knowledge Gaps in the Nexus of Climate, Peace & Security and its intersection with Human Mobility” on May 15, with the support of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), the Government of Switzerland through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

The webinar brought together representatives from embassies in Cairo including South Sudan, Somalia, Denmark, Japan, Norway, and Netherlands; in addition to representatives from regional and international organizations, including the African Union Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

The event featured discussions on two policy papers. The first, developed by CCCPA and NUPI, titled “Knowledge Gaps in the Nexus of Climate, Peace and Security”, offers lessons to support effective policy implementation and operational practices. The second, by IOM, titled “Developing Relevant and Coherent Programme and Policy Initiatives Using The Climate Change, Conflict and Migration Nexus Analytic Framework in The MENA Region” establishes an analytical framework for the climate change-conflict-migration (CCM) nexus, enabling context-specific understanding and approach thereof.

The experts broadly examined the interconnections between climate change, human mobility, and peacebuilding, with the view to advance durable solutions for climate-induced displacement, particularly in conflict-affected areas.

The discussions underscored the necessity of incorporating climate-related risks into national planning, as well as regional policies, programs and interventions, to facilitate a transition from crisis management to durable solutions for forced displacement. Furthermore, the experts shed light on existing efforts and good practices for integrating affected communities, including host and displaced populations, into peacebuilding processes to achieve inclusive development.  

The webinar contributes to the implementation of the COP27 Presidency Initiative "Climate Responses for Sustaining Peace" (CRSP), and particularly its third pillar on Advancing durable solutions to the Climate-Displacement Nexus, which addresses the interlinkages between climate change, displacement, and conflict, with a view toward building resilience against climate-induced risks and advancing climate action for sustaining peace in Africa.
