Arab States Gather to Exchange Experience on Migration Governance Indicators

(Cairo, 15 June 2023). The International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a Regional Exchange Workshop on Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) in Cairo. Government participants from 10 Arab countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen), came together both in person and online.

“The MGI is not a ranking of countries, and it is not prescriptive. It is about the consultative process it takes and can help States in establishing baselines to track and report progress.” Said David Martineau, MGI Programme Manager. “The results are owned by the States themselves and they can use the findings to inform policy changes”.

The workshop created an open space for knowledge sharing by MGI champion countries in the Arab region to showcase their experience to other Member States. Highlighting how the MGI strengthened their migration governance structures and what can be done to further aid efforts to achieve their key priorities.

The IOM Regional Office MENA also utilized the opportunity to foster discussions with participating Arab States on how to accelerate the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) implementation, follow-up and review process in their countries respectively.

“The MGI is voluntary, consultative and context specific. It can support the Arab States to identify good practices and areas that could be further developed as a preparation towards the next regional review on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in the Arab region” said Misato Yuasa, Senior Regional Liaison and Policy Officer, a.i.

The MGI originates as a response to governments request to track progress on target 10.7 of the SDGs: ‘facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, concluding through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies. The MGI used IOM’s Migration Governance Framework (MiGOF) as a basis to define “well-managed migration “insofar as its 90+ questions have been grouped under the three principles and three objectives of MiGOF.

Over 100 National governments and 70 Local authorities have utilized the MGI already in the world and the application for the new cycle is now open until 30 June 2023.
