In late 2018, Mariam* was recruited through an agent-based in Kenya to work as a domestic worker in Egypt. After arriving in Cairo, she was transferred to a different governorate, but she was not paid for many months.
In February 2020, she contacted IOM Egypt and was assisted to voluntarily return home through the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme. Before going home, Mariam wanted to share her story and send a message to every woman who finds herself in a similar situation.
*Her name has been changed to protect her identity.
